Open Source

The most important layers of technology should not depend on a single company, a single roadmap, or a single black box. They should be understandable, inspectable, extensible, and available to the people building on them.

At Frontal, we believe open source is one of the strongest ways to build that future.

Build in the open

We publish software because people should be able to understand what they depend on.

Open source gives engineers the ability to inspect implementation, understand trade-offs, contribute improvements, fork when necessary, and build without waiting for permission.

We want Frontal’s open-source work to be useful on its own, not simply a marketing surface for proprietary products.

Open the right layers

Not everything needs to be open.

We distinguish between the technology that benefits from broad collaboration and the systems that represent proprietary research, infrastructure, or product differentiation.

Our goal is not to open source everything. Our goal is to open source what becomes more valuable when more people can build on it.

Designed for contribution

Open source is a relationship with a community.

We aim to make our repositories approachable, documented, tested, and governed clearly. Contributions should have a path from idea to implementation, and users should be able to understand where a project is going.

We value contributions of every kind: code, documentation, tests, benchmarks, examples, bug reports, security research, and thoughtful criticism.

No artificial lock-in

Open source should create optionality.

Where practical, we prefer open standards, interoperable interfaces, portable formats, and composable primitives. Customers and developers should be able to understand how their systems work and move their workloads when their requirements change.

We build products people choose because they are better, not because leaving is impossible.

Give back

Using open source creates an obligation to contribute back.

When Frontal builds on the work of the broader software community, we aim to respect its licenses, maintain our dependencies responsibly, contribute improvements upstream where appropriate, and publish useful work of our own.

The ecosystem is part of the infrastructure we depend on.

Our commitment

We will continue to invest in open-source software as a core part of how Frontal builds.

We will favor transparency over unnecessary secrecy, interoperability over artificial barriers, and useful software over superficial openness.

The future of intelligent software should be built by more than one company.
